You’d think by looking at this blog that we only played two places (Kevin’s Bistro and Park Manor) and you’d be right. A lot of places are having live music but they’re either having big full bands or they’re having singles. Which would be a person playing guitar usually and singing.
So as a duo, that’s playing a lot of jazz and some pop tunes, you know there just doesn’t seem to be many options for us. We’re not a full band and we’re not a single.
Matter of fact the two places that were playing a lot usually only hire singles (at least that’s what the money says) and the only reason we take the gig is because we’re husband and wife team and it goes in the exact same bank account.
Add to that that most weddings don’t want singers and one of the reasons even those places that want singles would be happy to pay singles money and have a duo they usually only devote like a tiny little space for the entertainment. Plus there’s a whole bit where the entertainment options go way up in the summer because of patios but those gigs get cancelled regularly if the weather is bad. Not complaining it’s just a stating of reality.
Robert by himself gets lots of work playing weddings doing solo gigs and sitting in as a musician in groups but the Burtons duo, not so much.
